Setting Up a Proper Interview-Style Video

Setting Up a Proper Interview-Style Video

Videography

Interview-style videos are one of the most effective ways to share stories, perspectives, and expertise on camera. Whether the goal is education, storytelling, documentation, or outreach, a well-shot interview helps viewers focus on what’s being said without distraction. The good news is that creating a clean, professional interview setup doesn’t require an overly complex production — it just requires attention to a few key details.

From framing and audio to editing style, the choices you make shape how polished and engaging the final video feels.

Framing the Interview Subject

How you frame the person being interviewed has a big impact on how natural and professional the video looks. In most interview setups, the subject is framed from the chest or shoulders up, leaving a bit of space above the head. This creates a balanced, comfortable composition that keeps attention on the speaker without feeling cramped.

It’s also common to position the subject slightly off-center rather than directly in the middle of the frame. This allows them to look just off-camera toward the interviewer, which feels more conversational and less like they’re reading a script. If the subject is speaking directly to the audience, they may look into the camera instead — but this choice should be intentional and consistent throughout the video.

Background matters as well. A clean, uncluttered background helps keep the focus on the speaker. Even simple depth — placing the subject a few feet away from the background — can make the image feel more dimensional and polished.

Getting Clean, Reliable Audio

Good audio is often more important than perfect visuals in an interview. Viewers are far more likely to tolerate a slightly imperfect image than unclear or inconsistent sound.

For interview-style videos, a wireless lapel (lavalier) microphone is often the best choice. These small mics clip onto the interviewee’s clothing and stay close to their mouth, providing clear, consistent audio even if the subject moves slightly. This setup helps avoid the hollow or distant sound that built-in camera microphones often produce.

When using a lapel mic, placement matters. The microphone should be clipped securely, away from fabric that could rub against it, and positioned high enough to capture the voice clearly without being visually distracting. It’s also important to do a brief sound check before recording to catch issues like interference, background noise, or audio clipping.

Lighting and Environment Considerations

While lighting doesn’t need to be elaborate, it should be intentional. Soft, even lighting on the interviewee’s face helps avoid harsh shadows and creates a more flattering, approachable look. Natural light from a window can work well, as long as it’s consistent and not changing rapidly.

Pay attention to the environment as well. Quiet spaces reduce background noise, and controlling interruptions helps maintain a smooth flow during recording. These small considerations make the interview process easier for both the interviewer and the interviewee.

Different Interview Video Styles

There’s no single “right” way to structure an interview video — the style depends on the story you want to tell and how the content will be used.

In some interviews, the interviewer is included on camera, asking questions that remain in the final edit. This approach can feel conversational and transparent, making viewers feel like they’re part of the discussion. It works especially well for panel-style conversations or when the interviewer’s perspective adds context.

In other cases, the interview is edited so only the interviewee’s answers are shown, with the questions removed entirely. This creates a cleaner, more focused narrative and is commonly used for promotional, educational, or testimonial-style videos. The interviewee’s responses are often edited together so the video flows smoothly without interruptions.

Both approaches are valid — what matters is choosing a style that supports the message and audience rather than distracting from it.

Editing for Clarity and Flow

Once the interview is recorded, editing plays a key role in shaping the final piece. Cutting out long pauses, repeated thoughts, or off-topic moments helps keep the video engaging. In interview-only edits, careful pacing ensures the final video feels natural rather than choppy.

Simple visuals like cutaways, B-roll, or subtle text overlays can also help reinforce what’s being said without overwhelming the viewer.

A strong interview-style video comes from thoughtful preparation rather than complex gear. Clear framing, reliable audio, intentional lighting, and a deliberate editing style all work together to support the speaker and their message. When these elements are handled well, the technology fades into the background — allowing the story, insight, or experience being shared to take center stage.
